9 Electrical Questions to Ask an Electrician Before Hiring

Hiring any kind of skilled trade person to do work for you can be a challenge. You want a person who is qualified to do the work, will do quality work, and will fit in your budget. Sometimes it feels like finding all three of those things is impossible. If you are looking to hire an electrician to do work for you, get the best by asking the right electrical questions during the hiring process. Use these 9 questions to guide you to find the best person for the job.

1. Are You Licensed?

You don’t want to consider hiring an electrician who is not licensed. Most states require electricians to be licensed to get electrical work approved through public inspections.

2. Do You Have Insurance?

Your electrician should carry liability insurance of at least $500,000. This protects both them and you in the event of an accident while working for you.

3. Can You Provide References?

References provide you with information that a resume might not. Ask your electrician for references and call them. You can not only find out about the quality of work. But did the electrician show up when promised? Was the work done on time? Did they complete the job they were hired to do?

4. What Type of Electrical Work Do You Do?

Like any worker who has specialty training, electricians likely specialize in certain types of electrical work. Ask what kind of work they do. Is it residential? Do they work on commercial sites more? Do they work more on new construction versus repairs?

5. Do You Get Any Needed Permits?

Often electrical work will need to have a permit from the local building inspector. Work that needs a permit will also need to pass an inspection. Ask your electrician if they will need a permit to do the work they are completing. Also, ask if they will be pulling the permit or you will be expected to do that for them.

6. Who Performs the Actual Work?

This is an important question to ask especially as it relates to experience and training. Often electricians will employ other workers. You want to know specifically who will be doing to work on your project. Will it be the actual electrician you are interviewing? Will it be one of their workers? If they have workers, you want to know who will hold those workers accountable for completing the work correctly. You will also want to ask about the experience level of the workers.

7. What Experience Do You Have with This Type of Work?

An appropriate question involves not just training but also experience. You want to figure out if the electricians have experience doing this type of electrical work you need. With time in the field, comes experience. A good question to ask is how long the electrician has been doing this type of work.

8. What Does the Estimate Include?

Many times electrical work involves working in areas that are hidden. Does your estimate cover just the electrical work? Will the electrician be responsible for any repairs to walls etc from the work they do? You should expect an estimate spelling out exactly the services you can expect. Does the estimate include only the work or does it also include any needed materials?

9. Do You Provide Warranty for Your Work?

An electrician who is licensed and experienced should be expected to stand by their work. Ask what type of warranty or guarantee is included with the work offered.

I have been a client of Advantage Security for years now and am always satisfied with the services they provide. I started with monitoring just at my shop and then was so pleased I also have my house being monitored. They were able to use the same partitioning board that was set up at my shop by just adding a new code for my house so I didn’t have to pay for the system twice. There prices are very affordable and there service is outstanding.

We had our old aluminum wiring replaced with copper wiring, as recommended by Dave at Advantage Electric. Without his professional inspection, we wouldn't have known we had outdated wiring in the first place. Thank you, Dave! Highly recommend this company if you need a certified electrician in Hamilton.
